Course description

The General English course is designed for international students and focused primarily on developing their language skills required to successfully engage in a range of tertiary courses. General English is delivered at 4 levels which form a continuous program which cater for varying levels of English language proficiency. The length of each level is 12 weeks. Students study for 25 hours per week (20 hours in class in face-to-face mode and 5 hours of supervised self study per week). General English levels are:

Entry Requirement

No specific pre-requisites to enter General English are specified however it is expected that most students have had some experience of learning English in their home country. All students are given a placement test consisting of speaking, listening, reading and writing components. Students are placed in an appropriate level/class based on the results of these tests and an interview with an academic staff member.

Learning Outcome

The course has a number of broad aims to develop several aspects of the learners’ experience:

• develop overall competence in macro-skills of speaking, listening, writing and reading
• develop an awareness and understanding of the culture of English-speaking peoples
• develop skills for more effective language learning
• develop skills and abilities to effectively use the English language for international communication.

Delivery Approach
Delivery is in the Classroom and a simulated environment. Delivery is a minimum of 20 hours per week (face-to-face mode in class) and 5 hours of supervised self study per week, throughout the duration of the course and may include evening and weekend timetables.

Assessment:
Assessment methods are flexible, valid, reliable and fair. Assessment strategies include:
• Observation of student performance
• Projects, Assignments
• Presentations                                                                                                                   
• Simulated Activities
• Case Studies Questioning
• Tests/ Exams                                                                                                  


English for Academic Purposes

The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course at GIT Australia is a 20 week program designed for international students. The course is divided into two levels EAP1 and EAP 2 which cater for varying levels of English language proficiency. The EAP course aims to provide the linguistic skills required to successfully engage in a range of vocational courses. Students study for a total 25 hours per week (20 hours in class in face-to-face mode and 5 hours of supervised self study per week).

Requirements for entry into the EAP 1 course is an IELTS score of 4.5 or as assessed by academic entry tests set by this centre.

Learning Outcome

Broadly, based on the perceived needs analysis of learners undertaking EAP as a pathway to further study in English the Course has the following aims:

• To provide a positive learning environment that recognizes and builds upon previous language learning
• To develop in the learners a range of appropriate English language resources and study skills to enable them to fulfil their educational as well as personal needs
• To motivate students to continuously improve their English language
• To present learners with activities that promote both fluency and accuracy in language use
• To develop the ability to interpret a range of relevant authentic English language materials
• To develop confidence in communicating in English
